Understanding Wi-Fi interference in your home

Wireless interference happens when other devices or nearby networks disrupt your Wi-Fi, causing slow speeds or dropped connections. Wireless interference is one of the most common reasons for poor Wi-Fi. It occurs when other signals interrupt your Wi-Fi signal, making it harder for your devices to stay connected.📶💡

What causes wireless interference?

Many everyday devices use wireless signals that can interfere with Wi-Fi.

Common causes include

  • Nearby Wi-Fi networks from neighbours

  • Microwaves

  • Cordless phones

  • Baby monitors

  • Bluetooth devices

  • Smart home equipment

Interference is more common in flats, apartments, and busy residential areas.

How does wireless interference affect my Wi-Fi?

Wireless interference can cause:

  • Slow internet speeds

  • Wi-Fi cutting out

  • Video calls freezing

  • Streaming buffering or stopping

📝 Note: Interference can come and go depending on what devices are in use nearby. This is why you may notice drops or issues at certain times of day

How can I reduce wireless interference?

There are simple steps you can take to reduce interference at home.

Move your router

  • Place it away from TVs, microwaves, and speakers

  • Keep it in an open area

Change your Wi-Fi band

  • Use 5GHz if you are close to the router (usually within 20 meters)

  • Use 2.4GHz if you are further away

📝 Note: Your router by default will only display one wireless network. We can help with splitting the network into 2 bands, so you can choose between 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.

💡 Tip: For help with changing your Wi-Fi band, please see our article What are 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi bands and how do they work?

Restart your router

  • This can refresh the Wi-Fi connection and improve performance, as when the router powers up, it scans the wireless frequency and moves you to a new channel with the least amount of congestion - It's like changing lanes on a motorway.

💡 Tip: Restarting your router once a month can help reduce issues

Does switching channels help?

All of Home Unity's routers automatically choose the best Wi-Fi channel when the router is powered on.

What this means

  • Your router may already manage this for you

  • Manual changes are not always needed

If interference continues, Home Unity support can check your settings.

When should I contact Home Unity?

Contact Home Unity support if:

  • Wi-Fi problems happen even near the router

  • Issues occur at certain times of day

  • You live in a busy building with many networks

We can help check if interference is affecting your connection and suggest the best fix.
